What Is the Holiday Calculator?
The Holiday Calculator displays all official public holidays for a given year and country, showing the exact date, day of the week, and a countdown (or elapsed days) for each holiday. It currently supports the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada — three of the most common English-speaking regions with distinct public holiday systems.
Public holidays (also called federal holidays, bank holidays, or statutory holidays depending on the country) are officially designated non-working days on which government offices, banks, schools, and many businesses close. Understanding when public holidays fall is essential for scheduling meetings, planning deliveries, forecasting payroll, and organizing travel.
Some holidays fall on fixed calendar dates each year (e.g., Christmas is always December 25), while others are floating holidays computed relative to the calendar — for example, US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, and UK Easter Monday depends on the Computus algorithm. This calculator handles both types automatically for each supported country.
How Holiday Dates Are Computed
Fixed holidays (New Year's Day, Independence Day, Christmas) are simply assigned to their calendar date each year. Floating holidays use two rules:
Nth Weekday of Month
Where:
- weekday= Target day of week (0=Sun, 1=Mon, ..., 6=Sat)
- n= Which occurrence to find (1=first, 2=second, 3=third, 4=fourth)
- diff= Days from the 1st of the month to the first occurrence of the target weekday
- date= Day of the month of the nth occurrence of the target weekday
US Federal Holidays
| Holiday | When | Type |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | January 1 | Fixed |
| MLK Jr. Day | 3rd Monday of January | Floating |
| Presidents' Day | 3rd Monday of February | Floating |
| Memorial Day | Last Monday of May | Floating |
| Juneteenth | June 19 | Fixed (since 2021) |
| Independence Day | July 4 | Fixed |
| Labor Day | 1st Monday of September | Floating |
| Thanksgiving | 4th Thursday of November | Floating |
| Christmas Day | December 25 | Fixed |
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter a Year: Type any year between 1900 and 2100 in the Year field.
- Select a Country: Choose US (United States), UK (United Kingdom), or CA (Canada) from the dropdown.
- Review the Holiday List: The table shows each holiday, its exact date, day of the week, and whether it is upcoming, today, or past.
- Plan Ahead: Use the countdown values to schedule meetings, deliveries, or travel well in advance of public holidays.
Real-World Applications
HR and payroll teams use holiday calculators to pre-populate company calendars, compute paid time off entitlements, and plan payroll run dates that avoid public holidays. Many countries require extra pay (time-and-a-half or double-time) for work performed on statutory holidays, making the accurate identification of these dates a compliance requirement.
Project managers and operations teams plan deliveries, deadlines, and staffing around public holiday patterns. Knowing that a product launch falls the week before Thanksgiving, for example, allows the team to adjust timelines and escalation paths before the schedule is set in stone.
Travelers and expatriates frequently need to know the public holidays of their destination country to plan itineraries, anticipate bank and business closures, and book accommodations before prices spike during holiday periods.

Tips & Best Practices
- ✓When a fixed holiday (like July 4) falls on a weekend, most employers observe it on the adjacent Friday or Monday — check your employee handbook.
- ✓Plan international shipments and wire transfers at least 2 business days before a public holiday to avoid settlement delays.
- ✓The UK observes Good Friday and Easter Monday as bank holidays — schedule no financial transactions on these dates.
- ✓Use the year selector to plan future project calendars — see all holidays for 2027 or 2028 instantly.
- ✓Canadian provinces have additional holidays beyond federal ones (Family Day, Heritage Day, etc.) — verify with provincial government sources for full lists.
- ✓Holiday weeks (especially Thanksgiving and Christmas) often see reduced staffing — allow extra time for approvals and responses.
